Assessments

Three preseason assessments are available this year at no cost. They're designed to help place skaters into the appropriate winter division. The board reserves the right to move any player during the season to keep teams balanced.

Brief Summary of TCQHA's Level Structure

TCQHA levels players on a 1-5 scale based on overall hockey ability, from beginner to advanced. Level 1 players are newer to skating and still developing core skills like stopping and puck control. Level 2 players are comfortable and balanced skaters who understand basic positional play. Level 3 — the largest group in adult rec hockey — represents well-rounded, average ability across most skills. Level 4 players show strong all-around skating, passing, and shooting, often with past competitive or coached experience. Level 5 players perform at a high level across every skill, with strong game sense and above-average conditioning. Assessments help place you accurately within this range so your team is competitive and fun for everyone involved. You can find more detail about TCQHA's current level descriptions here.

Do I need to assess?

You need to assess if any of the following apply:

• You're new to TCQHA and didn't skate with us during the 2025-2026 Winter Season.
• You're returning and want to register at a different self-assessed level than you played last season.
• You're unsure which level fits you — level descriptions are available here.

If you're a returning player and register at a higher self-assessed level than last season without assessing, we'll adjust you back to your prior level. For example: if you registered as a Level 3 last season and sign up as a Level 4 this winter without assessing, you'll be moved to the 2/3 skate and adjusted to Level 3.
