Frequently Asked Questions

What am I getting paid?

$60 for an hour game with two officials

$90 for an hour game worked solo

$75 for 1.25 hour games with two officials

Extra $5 for games with a "layover" where you have to wait a bit between ice times

What rulebook do I use?

In short, USA Adult Hockey. It's a good base for standard hockey rules.

  • Icing errors go to last play, not center ice.
  • Nine-dot faceoffs, no advantage gained
  • Hand pass allowed in defensive zone.
  • Tag-up offsides and red line icing, immediate whistle for shot on goal during delayed offsides
  • Players are replaced for coincidental penalties
  • Penalty faceoffs go to offending team's defensive zone
  • Neck and mouth guards are not required.

But is this league USA Hockey? Do I wear my patch?

No, please remove your patch if you can. If it's sewn on not a big deal.

The waiver you filled out means that there is some insurance, but if you are worried you can purchase supplemental insurance here: https://www.naso.org/member-benefits/insurance/

I have to give up this game

Well that sucks, but if it's:

> 48 Hours before puck drop - just delete yourself from the schedule and/or ask your favorite rostered colleague

< 47 Hours before puck drop - send email to tcqha-officials@googlegroups.com that the spot has been made available

The afternoon of: contact the ref coordinator and the email group

What happens if I No-show a game?

For an emergency or otherwise unexpected event - No fine, but please reach out ASAP to your partner to make sure everyone knows.

Because you forgot:

First time: $60 fee (shit happens, but don't do it).

Second time or not paying fee before next scheduled game: Removal from league

What is the level of play in this league? How do I call it?

Upper includes former junior and college players on the ice but ranges to average skilled beer leaguers. Lower is a range that includes said beer leaguers to literally second time on skates.

Please don't call "lack of bodily control" penalties (checking, elbowing, interference) unless it's legitimately warranted. A good example of this would be an uncoordinated newer skater running into an experienced skater. The penalty should be served if it could have been avoided or was intentional. Call hooking/tripping/slashing if a newer player hooks/trips/slashes someone (even accidentally) - but not if the skater skates over the stick.

If there is a situation that warrants a major, misconduct, or game misconduct (checking from behind, charging, kneeing...) contact the ref coordinator asap. Don't be afraid to call these! Use your judgement! We'll back you up either way.

But why can't I just only work solo? Hockey Finder lets me.

Yeah, and the last Hockey Finder game I played the solo official called a goal from the far blue line... and it wasn't a goal.

I get that coverage emergencies happen, especially at ass o'clock, and so solo officials are allowed.

You are working the job of two officials, but it's a disservice to the players because you can't see everything. Therefore, we prefer two if possible.

A person was rude to me/made me feel unwelcome on the ice.

Get their number, and tell their captain (every team should have a C, if not just ask). You have the option of immediately sending them off with or without fanfare.

This league is inclusive for everyone involved, no matter sexual orientation or gender presentation. This includes the officiating staff!

Off-color chirps or yelling at the sweater is less tolerated here than it would be in a league like AHA or WHAM. If you're even mildly upset, let us know.

If your partner was less than pleasant to you, please contact Chelsea. Bad days happen, but don't be a dick.

If it's the next day/week and you're still upset about anything, contact the ref coordinator.
